India celebrates Indian Newspaper Day on January 29 each year to honor the launch of the country’s first printed newspaper, Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, in 1780.

Indian Newspaper Day History

Indian Newspaper Day marks January 29, 1780, when James Augustus Hicky published Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, Asia’s first printed newspaper, from Calcutta. It featured local gossip, British critiques, and ads, challenging colonial censorship and sparking public discourse. The British shut it down in 1782 via press regulations, but it pioneered India’s vibrant print media legacy.

Today, it celebrates newspapers’ role in democracy, from freedom struggle voices like The Hindu to modern dailies shaping opinions.

Role and Significance

Newspapers fueled India’s independence by amplifying leaders’ voices and exposing injustices, despite acts like the Vernacular Press Act of 1878 curbing regional language press. They promote literacy, accountability, and informed citizenship amid digital challenges. Indian Newspaper Day 2026 reminds us of print media’s enduring trust over social media.

India boasts over 100,000 registered publications in diverse languages, fostering national unity.
