Holi –

Holi Festival – Origin and Spirit

Meaning of Holi

Literally “Holi” signifies “burning”. The reference comes from ancient Indian mythology and is associated with the legend of Hiranyakashipu.

Legend of Hiranyakashipu and Prahlad

In ancient India, there lived a demon king named Hiranyakashipu. He wanted to avenge his brother’s death at the hands of Lord Vishnu. He performed severe penance and received a powerful boon. Believing himself invincible, he ordered everyone to worship him instead of God. However, his son Prahlad was a devoted follower of Vishnu. Enraged, the king planned to kill him. His sister Holika, who had a boon making her immune to fire, sat on a burning pyre holding Prahlad. Miraculously, Prahlad survived unharmed, while Holika was burned to ashes. This symbolized the victory of good over evil. Even today, Holika Dahan (bonfire) is performed on the eve of Holi to signify the burning of evil. —

The Spirit of Holi

Holi is an ancient festival celebrating the triumph of good over evil. Though colors define its external appearance, its soul lies in this moral victory. —

Krishna and the Colorful Holi

The colorful celebration of Holi is linked to Lord Krishna. During his childhood in Gokul and Vrindavan, Krishna playfully drenched village girls with water and colors. Over time, these playful acts evolved into a joyful tradition. Krishna’s love for Radha and playful interactions with the Gopis added romance and color to the festival. This tradition gradually spread across India and became a grand community celebration. Ancient paintings, murals, sculptures, and scriptures across the world document Krishna’s Holi celebrations.
