Early Life and Education
Veer Savarkar was born on May 28, 1883, in Bhagur near Nashik, Maharashtra. From a young age, he imbibed nationalist ideals and studied at Fergusson College. While studying law in London, he accessed books on the 1857 revolt from the India Office Library and authored the historic book ‘The Indian War of Independence’.
Revolutionary Activities
He founded Mitra Mela in 1899, which later became the Abhinav Bharat Society in 1904 to train youth in revolutionary ideology. Arrested in 1909, he was sentenced to 50 years of life imprisonment and endured harsh punishment in the Cellular Jail (Kala Pani).
Hindutva Ideology
In his 1923 work ‘Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?’, Savarkar defined Hindutva as a cultural and national identity. He worked to eliminate untouchability and built the Patit Pavan Mandir to promote social equality. He became the president of the Hindu Mahasabha in 1937.
Contributions to Freedom Struggle
Savarkar portrayed the 1857 revolt as India’s first war of independence. During his internment in Ratnagiri, he focused on social reform and national awakening. Though accused in the Gandhi assassination case, he was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
