THE AMRITSAR DISPATCH
A Dark Day in British India
On April 13, 1919, the peaceful gathering at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar turned into one of the deadliest massacres in world history. Thousands of people had gathered to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi and peacefully protest the arrest of leaders Satyapal and Saifuddin Kitchlew.
Acting on the orders of Brigadier-General Dyer, British troops blocked the only narrow exit and opened fire on the unarmed crowd without warning. For ten minutes, 1,650 rounds were fired, leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured. The “Butcher of Amritsar” intended to “strike terror” into the hearts of the Indian people.
This horrific event became a turning point in the Indian freedom struggle. It fueled the Non-Cooperation Movement and led Rabindranath Tagore to renounce his Knighthood in protest against British brutality.
